Early Collaboration with MiTek Mezzanine Secures Optimal Warehouse Build Solution from Day One

Noatum has successfully enhanced its logistics operations by integrating advanced automation technology across multiple floors in its new warehouse. MiTek's mezzanine solution has streamlined processes and is designed to work in harmony with automated handling systems. Additionally, the warehouse has been optimized to support future automation and robotics, positioning it for seamless adaptation to evolving customer requirements and emerging technologies.

The Customer

Noatum Logistics is a leading global contract logistics provider and one of the top 50 freight forwarders worldwide. Offering comprehensive supply chain solutions, Noatum handles its customers' goods from their point of origin overseas to the UK and provides omnichannel distribution throughout the UK and Europe. This covers not only transport, storage and order fulfilment, but also returns management and value-added services.

The Project

Noatum recently built a new distribution facility, ePoint Medway, which is strategically located to the east of London. The 20m-tall warehouse was designed to handle peak volumes for Noatum's e-commerce customers including major women's fashion business, TFG London – owner of famous brands including Phase Eight, Hobbs and Whistles. Noatum had the foresight to involve MiTek early in the development of the project. This early engagement enabled visits to the site of an existing customer and to MiTek's Innovation Hub, a unique R&D centre and product showroom.

The Challenge

In order to offer its retail, wholesale and e-commerce clients high productivity to drive cost savings, Noatum specified leading-edge materials handling automation. The company's requirements included:

→    A significant amount of space over several floors to accommodate specialised product handling areas, e.g. hanging garments
→    Seamless integration of the automated handling systems across the floors
→    Future-proofing by making the new facility suitable for further automation and robotics in line with customer requirements.

The Solution

Early involvement enabled MiTek to propose that the building's roof be raised slightly to enable the installation of an additional floor. The mezzanine solution for Noatum:

→    Features 275,000 sq ft of space
→    Integrates with 10 miles of racking and conveyors, 15,000 semi-automated storage positions and 18 loading bays
→    Includes a fourth level (completed but not yet integrated) to give flexibility for the future
→    Enables Noatum to handle
5 million parcels a year
→    Took only 14 weeks to construct, with the entire facility completed in 44 weeks.

The Benefits

By integrating the automation technology across the various floors, the mezzanine solution has enabled Noatum to streamline logistics processes for its clients in order to deliver:

→    Fast, efficient and accurate processing, even during peaks
→    Optimised storage and space utilisation
→    The highest levels of workplace health and safety
→    Margin increases through cost savings
→    Flexibility for future growth.
