Precision Under Pressure – MiTek at Cheb, Czechia

Construction is completed for one of the largest AutoStore installation in mainland Europe. The system was built in partnership with a leading system integrator in a brand-new warehouse measuring 1,000m by 200m and located in the Czech Republic. The omnichannel facility serves a major fashion and lifestyle retailer and supporta its international distribution operations. The AutoStore solution – which incorporate some 2,500 robots and 500,000 bins – is supported by a highly engineered steel platform structure constructed by the MiTek team.

The Customer

A leading household-name fashion retailer expanding its European logistics network engaged MiTek to deliver mezzanine and structural support solutions for one of the largest automated fulfilment centres in Czechia. The facility in Cheb forms a vital part of the retailer’s drive to enhance speed and efficiency in its supply chain, particularly for fashion distribution.

The Project

Located in Cheb, western Czechia, the distribution centre (DC) spans approximately 120,000 square metres across seven halls and includes up to four structural levels. The heart of the facility features one of Europe’s largest AutoStore systems, supported by a bespoke mezzanine infrastructure designed, supplied and installed by MiTek. Across the wider site, MiTek delivered 32,000 square metres of mezzanine flooring, integrated to support a range of automation, including conveyors, spiral chutes, and hanging garment systems.

The Challenge

The scale and complexity of the Cheb site introduced numerous technical, logistical, and cultural challenges. The AutoStore system demanded structural tolerances as tight as 0.3mm—an unusually fine margin that delayed the start due to concrete rework. MiTek also had to manage intricate coordination among more than 20 trades on a multilingual, live construction site. Vertical access at heights of up to 15 metres required specialist lifting equipment, while interfacing steel structures with cutting-edge automation systems presented further engineering demands. Add to this varying local regulations, seismic design requirements, and tight delivery deadlines, and the project represented a formidable challenge.

The Solution

MiTek adopted a phased delivery strategy, allowing for flexible, responsive scheduling across the multiple build zones. Designs were released incrementally to align with construction progress and inter-trade coordination. When delays arose, the team reconfigured their logistics and redeployed resources to maintain momentum. Site meetings were held twice daily to coordinate efforts, resolve issues, and plan forward. Translators were embedded within each team to mitigate language barriers. Critically, MiTek maintained UK-level health and safety standards throughout, despite regional differences in regulations. A committed on-site presence ensured consistency and rapid decision-making over the two-year programme.

The Benefit

MiTek completed its scope of works on time, delivering a highly complex, high-precision infrastructure capable of supporting over 500,000 totes and 2,500 robots. Their flexible, forward-thinking approach allowed other contractors to continue their work seamlessly, contributing to the success of the wider facility. The project cemented MiTek’s reputation not merely as a mezzanine supplier, but as a strategic partner for automation-led logistics environments. Lessons learned from Cheb are now shaping similar ongoing projects, including a follow-up installation in Poland for the same client. MiTek’s ability to adapt, coordinate, and lead in high-pressure, multinational environments proved instrumental in realising this landmark logistics hub.
