Rapid mezzanine delivery keeps rail project on track

MiTek recently partnered with a new client in the transport industry to deliver a custom mezzanine solution that overcame a unique structural challenge: designing the mezzanine with precise column placements to avoid interference with the existing slab’s steel membrane. Through proactive collaboration with the general contractor and meticulous project management, our team successfully delivered the mezzanine ahead of schedule and within budget, ensuring the overall project stayed on track.

CUSTOMER

Kier Transportation is the transport division of Kier Group plc, one of the UK’s leading infrastructure services and construction companies and a strategic supplier to the UK government. Kier Transportation designs, builds and maintains vital infrastructure for the country’s road, rail, air and sea sectors. In this project, Kier was tasked with delivering a new development for Network Rail, which owns and operates Britain's railway infrastructure.

PROJECT

Network Rail has invested in a brand-new facility alongside the West Coast main line at Bletchley in Buckinghamshire. Bletchley Super Depot serves as a strategic base for Network Rail, accommodating both storage and training facilities. With a project value of £12 million, the development comprises offices, classrooms, breakout areas and welfare facilities – including toilets, showers, kitchens, laundry, lockers and an outdoor wellbeing area. It also features a parts warehouse – including a workshop with mezzanine floor and battery storage zones – and 174 parking spaces, some with EV charging infrastructure.

CHALLENGE

There were two challenging aspects to Bletchley Super Depot from MiTek’s perspective:

→ The original main contractor (Buckingham Group) went into administration during the project. As Kier Group acquired the company’s rail assets, which became part of Kier Transportation, the MiTek team needed to understand the procedures of the new client quickly.

→ Design of the mezzanine required the columns to be located in order to avoid areas of steel membrane that had historically been used to strengthen the slab.

SOLUTION

MiTek designed and installed a single-storey mezzanine for the parts warehouse at Bletchley Super Depot. The solution features 60-minute fire protection to enclose all steelwork, including:

→ Suspended ceiling

→ Column cladding

→ Facias

→ Ceiling section dividers.

BENEFITS

The benefits to Kier and Network Rail of MiTek’s efforts were clear:

→ Proactive collaboration to understand the needs of Kier as the new project lead, combined with skilled project management, enabled the MiTek team to deliver the mezzanine ahead of schedule and keep the project on track.

→ Installation of the mezzanine in just three weeks – and within budget – helped ensure that Network Rail could begin operations as soon as feasibly possible.
