Seamless and Fast Installation: Boosting Efficiency Without Halting Emergency Operations

One of the world’s busiest emergency ambulance services faced a critical challenge: optimising storage and sortation within its existing warehouse without interrupting access to essential supplies during ongoing response operations. A steel mezzanine solution was selected to maximize space and avoiding relocating—an option that would have caused significant operational disruption. This innovative approach allowed the ambulance service to streamline operations, improve efficiency, and maintain critical response readiness throughout the project.

The Customer

The client is one of the world’s busiest emergency ambulance service, providing emergency servie to over nine million people, covering an area of 620 square miles and its crews attend more than 3000 emergencies a day.

The Project

Ensuring that ambulances are cleaned, refuelled and restocked with all essential medical supplies is the task of the ‘Make Ready’ teams. These teams work predominantly at night to prepare all the vehicles for their next shift. The work of the Make Ready operatives at the sation was hampered by lack of space, so the client took the decision to invest in a mezzanine floor to provide additional working space.

The Challenge

The mezzanine floor installed at the depot was relatively simple in design and construction. However, the fact that it needed to be built in very limited space and during ongoing emergency response operations created additional logistical challenges for the MiTek team.

With careful project planning and close attention to health and safety requirements, the installation area was cordoned off, with an additional area used for temporary storage of mezzanine components during construction.

The Solution

Working in close collaboration with one of our approved installation teams under the direction of our in-house Site Manager, we delivered a solution that was:

→ A single-storey mezzanine

→ Supplied with comprehensive fire protection

→ Installed in a period of just three weeks

→ Successfully delivered to the customer’s tight timescales and within budget.

The Benefits

The first of potentially five solutions for LAS, the mezzanine floor at the Ilford site has secured a number of benefits:

→ By utilising the height of the building, LAS has avoided the need to move premises to achieve more room

→ The solution has provided space for the ‘Make Ready’ teams to work more comfortably and efficiently

→ The capacity of the operation has been increased by at least 40%.

"The mezzanine floor dramatically increased the amount of space at the Ilford site, enhancing the working environment and boosting productivity."
